What makes cantaloupe sweeter

Great info, thanks. I am doing melon for the first time this year, I have sugar baby and crimson sweet watermelons and Hales best muskmelon. They are just now starting to set the fruits, should I cut back on watering and fertilizing in order to hav sweeter fruits? The melons take about 5 weeks to mature so it is important to provde good moisture until the last 2 weeks.

Even then, there are other developing melons on the same plant which need some water yet. It has a buttery texture and super sweet flesh. I grow them every year. Beautiful orange skins and aroma too. It does best with hot summers and dry conditions. I plant seeds or seedlings in bottomless plastic one gallon or two gallon pots that I've sunk into the soil in the garden. I irrigate deeply once or twice a week in dry weather, every day during droughts, but not at all if there is frequent rainfall.

I feed them with composted manure, placing it in the pot where they are growing and then filling the pot with water. This assures that the melon is getting all of the water and manure. That is where I put the hose on a slow soak to irrigate down deep. I also mulch with straw to help retain the moisture in the ground and keep the roots cool.

The straw keeps your melons up out of the dirt as well. Keep in mind that I have very sandy soil with extra good drainage. Indem Sie weiterhin auf der Website surfen bzw. Mehr erfahren. Sign In. Join as a Pro. Houzz TV. Houzz Research.

Those tips are excellent - I go by the aroma mostly but I never thought about the weight as well. I always look to be sure there is that c-spot can't think of it now as you said to signify that it was on the ground and ripening! Anyhow, great info and helps you get a good melon!

I too did not know that a cantaloupe does not continue to ripen once it is picked from the vine. What a great list, I often have a hard time choosing the right cantaloupe - which is so dissappointing once I get home. Well now I know what I have been doing wrong all these years! I had no idea. I really believed they continued to ripen. Now I can't wait to go to the grocery store and buy one! I had no idea that a cantaloupe doesn't continue to ripen after you get it home.

What valuable information this is! This explains why I find myself disappointed with my choice so often! Thank you!

Meat Dishes. Vegetable Dishes. Green Beans. Ice Cream. Dining Out. Now one of the things that salt does is in effect to draw water toward itself. If you have a region of high salt concentration next to one of low salt concentration, the water from the low-salt concentration area will move over to the high-salt area.

By sprinkling a little salt on your melon you are creating a high-salt concentration area next to those cells. Their water is drawn up to the surface where you bite, bringing flavor with it.

The melon has become miraculously sweeter thanks to salt! Leaves are responsible for taking in the sunlight energy that helps produce those sugars in the fruit. Diseases, bugs or even just small leaf size due to things like lack of water, poor nutrition or lousy soil are all potential drawbacks. So that would be something you could easily assess -- were your plants healthier and blessed with bigger leaves last year than this year? The variety you grow is another factor.

If you planted the same variety this year as last, you can rule out this one. But if you grew a different variety this year, it could be one that just isn't as well suited to our soils and temperatures. The solution there would be to go back to what you grew before.

And finally, there's the issue of too many fruits. If a lot of fruits are ripening around the same time, they have to split up the available sugars. That means you'll get more fruits, but all of them would be less sweet.
